JURIED ART SHOW AT RODMAN HALL
Congratulations to the following students for their acceptance into the Rodman Hall Juried Art Exhibition: Jayce Jung, Ireland Vanderkooy, Taylor Goertz, Lauren Alguire, Aidan Zeglinsk, Jazmin Wolff, Catherine Pan and Eden Rikkerink. Opening reception was on Thursday, March 29th.
Kristen Ciccarelli visited Eden High School’s library Book Club, on Wednesday, March 7th. Kristen is the author of the newest and hottest young adult fiction book “The Last Namsara,” published by Harper Collins. This book has been picked as a staff favourite at Chapters.
Kristen graduated from Eden and grew up in the Niagara Peninsula on her grandfather’s grape farm, where she spent her childhood running wild with her cousins and dreaming of dragons. She was thrilled with the wonderful response and questions from the students at Eden High School. She stated it was such a joy to walk the halls of Eden once more and see both old and new faces, plus answer the many students questions.
The Arts Department has begun an Artist Spotlight feature, where students from 3 disciplines (Visual Arts, Drama and Music) are highlighted regularly to recognize their efforts and creativity. Our first inductees are Amy Hopman for music, Catharine Pan for visual arts and Aidyn Kasper for drama. You can find these, as well as other happenings, in our classes and department through our Instagram @edenhigharts.
Upon returning from March break, 5 Arts classes (125+ students) gathered over the period of 1 week to launch a huge collaborative project. In the interest of innovating arts education and invigorating creative thought processes, students were given a theme or concept and had to interpret the theme to create something that incorporates the skills of the students in their groups.
CARDBOARD BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS
On March 8th, Gabe Masaluk, Tyler Bush, Bennet Warkentine and Capt Ben Busca took gold in the Provincial Cardboard Boat Championships in Waterloo. They had a top weight score of 762 lbs and scored a personal best time of 15.2 seconds.
EDEN PARTICIPATES IN SCIENCE DAY AT BROCK
On February 23rd, a group of 23 Grade 12 science students spent a day at Brock University for “Science Day at Brock.” The day included a presentation from Co-op, Career and Experiential Education at Brock University about hands-on opportunities for students in the Sciences. We were also excited to hear from an Eden grad, who is in her final year of the Med Plus program, talk about her experiences there. Students sat in a University Chemistry lecture, participated in either a chemistry lab activity synthesizing alum or a biochemistry lab, involving DNA extraction and fingerprinting of their own DNA. The day concluded with a pizza lunch and a brief campus tour. Students loved their stimulating educational experience and were thrilled to “do science” in university labs.
GIRLS HOCKEY FIRST TEAM
The girls had a fantastic season and went an unbelievable 14-3-1 capturing the zone 4 championship by defeating Grimsby in the NRHSAA final and then defeating Holy Cross in the zone 4 final, securing a berth to SOSSA. Unfortunately, we lost at SOSSA and did not advance to OFSAA. Shout out to the athletes that are graduating; Chiara Aceti, Brooke Switzer, Val Langbroek, Sheilagh Troup, Mackenzie Blake and Jenna Vanderhoeven.
JUST KEEP SWIMMING
Eden’s swim team swam away with three bronze medals at the OFSAA swim competition in Windsor this past month. Reese Doucett won two bronze medals for her 50m and 100m freestyle for the para category. In addition, Brandon Bigger won bronze for the 100m para freestyle in a dramatic finish. Noah Schouten and Grace Coveney also had strong performances in their individual events.
Eden Athletics is off to a busy start this spring. With the most teams of any AA division school in Niagara, programs have started to organize: girls softball, boys baseball, 2 girls soccer teams, varsity girl’s rugby, Jr and Sr boy’s rugby, Jr and Sr co-ed volleyball and ultimate frisbee. Individual spring sports are also starting up with athletes competing in track and field, rowing and badminton. Collectively these programs are supported by 14 Eden staff and at least 6 committed community volunteers. Eden Football is also offering a regular after school training program for current and future flyers. Check out some recent results from the winter season, including a girls volleyball OFSAA bronze medal and three bronze medals for swimmers, on Twitter @eden_athletics and check out us online at www.edenathletics.org to learn more about our sports programming.
