Even though only four people showed up to pick up cigarette butts for the 2018 Butt Blitz, they were able to collect 5,180 butts in Beamsville and 4,396 on James Street, in St. Catharines. That’s 9,576 butts to ship to Terracycle in Toronto. Terracycle processes the butts in such a way that the tobacco is composted and the filters are broken down into compounds that are used to make plastic shipping pallets. Every butt that gets picked up is preventing the contamination of our waterways and keeping toxins out of the land. Next year with more volunteers even more butts can be collected! The total butts received so far is 217,350.
