I’ve been at SNAP Fitness in the Junction for four years now, and my photo can’t compare to the shots of chiseled bodies on many fitness websites. But I love this photo: it shows me being active four years after I staggered into the gym reeling from a two year battle with stage IV throat and neck cancer. Intensive radiation, chemo, antibiotics, and radical neck surgery left me a mess: severe weakness, fatigue and weight gain. Thyroid damage created wild hormonal swings. I really needed help to follow my doctors’ advice to push myself back into activity.
What SNAP gave me is a great team of trainers with the expertise, experience and enthusiasm to help me work through my illness and injury toward the healthy life I wanted to get back. My SNAP team coached me on stretching, weightlifting and conditioning workouts, moving me steadily toward restored energy and fitness. We tracked metrics to show my progress and maintain momentum towards my goals. I moved from needing help to lift my arms over my head to lifting with heavy weights. I moved from struggling to walk around the block to enjoying aerobic classes. I dropped 32lb, cutting my body fat by more than half in year two and have kept it off. Restoring my mobility and best of all feeling well is priceless.
It’s been hard work. And I’ve loved it all.
