“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, we welcome today’s announcement that engineer, astronaut and national icon, Julie Payette, has agreed to serve as the next governor general of Canada.
“We congratulate Prime Minister Trudeau for choosing an iconic figure that Canadians, from communities across our country, will proudly rally around in such a symbolic, important and unifying role.
“This past year I had the opportunity to address the 2017 graduating classes from the University of Toronto Mississauga and St. Michael’s University College. I discussed our historic sesquicentennial and referenced accomplished men and women who shaped Canada’s first 150 years.
“I spoke of Canadians who defied gravity and reached for the stars. I was referring to Julie Payette.
“Julie Payette’s mandate is an opportunity to spark interest, excitement and encourage young girls to study, push the boundaries and undertake rewarding careers in the fields of STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“I also want to acknowledge outgoing Governor General David Johnston and Mrs. Sharon Johnston. His Excellency presided over a number of milestones that strengthened the relationship between Canada and the Crown.
“From all of us in Mississauga, we wish Julie Payette the very best as she prepares to embark on this new frontier in her inspiring life.
